Ancient Prairie, a movement from the composer’s larger 2015 work Whispers on the Prairie Wind for the Utah Symphony, Utah Chamber Artists, Utah Symphony Chorus, and University of Utah Choirs, sets a famous Chinese poem from the ninth century. The expansive prairie described in Ešenvalds’ work depicts the Chinese countryside as much as it does the limitless landscapes of the American west, where the work received its premiere.
