Saint-Saëns’s Danse Macabre began life in 1874 as a song, then as a tone poem for full orchestra, and quickly became one of his most popular works. It conjures a midnight scene where Death himself plays the fiddle, summoning skeletons to dance until dawn. The music brims with wit and theatrical colour: eerie harp strokes mark the hour, a skeletal waltz spins to life, and the revels build to a thrilling climax. This arrangement distills the orchestral spectacle into a virtuosic chamber setting. The harp evokes both the tolling bells and the dance’s rhythmic drive, while flute and viola/clarinet trade playful and sinister voices. Compact yet no less dramatic, the trio transforms Danse Macabre into a rousing concert finale piece — vivid, dazzling, and irresistible in its energy.
