Partition de Georg Friedrich Haendel (1685–1759). Formé en Allemagne et en Italie, Haendel s'établit définitivement à Londres en 1712 où il domine la vie musicale anglaise pendant un demi-siècle. Maître de l'oratorio en langue anglaise — Messiah (1741), Israel in Egypt, Samson, Judas Maccabaeus — il excelle aussi dans l'opéra seria, les suites orchestrales (Water Music, Music for the Royal Fireworks) et les concerti grossi op. 3 et op. 6, qui comptent parmi les chefs-d'œuvre du genre. Son écriture vocale, d'une ampleur dramatique et d'un lyrisme soutenus, a exercé une influence directe sur Haydn et Beethoven. Le catalogue haendelien est l'un des plus riches du répertoire baroque.
