Le compositeur anglais Andrew Lloyd Webber (1948) a su enchaîner les succès mondiaux au cours des cinq dernières décennies. La comédie musicale et film controversée Jesus Christ Superstar (1971) a été suivie par Evita (1976), Cats (1981), Song and Dance (1982), une combinaison de Variations et Tell me on a Sunday, Starlight Express (1984) et Requiem (1985). Son Phantom of the Opera a été créé en 1986 avec Sarah Brightman (l’ancienne épouse de Lloyd Webber) et Michael Crawford. La comédie musicale a remporté à la fois le Laurence Olivier Award et le Evening Standard Drama Award de la meilleure comédie musicale de 1986.
