For Mezzo-soprano and piano, 'Waka' is a song cycle in five parts based on translations of Japanese Waka poetry. The brief, elliptical poems are mostly single sentences, about stylised subject matter and commenting upon the human experience. Initially set in Japanese in 1972, this version uses the English translation for which the cycle was recomposed ten years later.
