Après avoir composé la pièce non conventionnelle mais très réussie Night Piece (Notturno) pour le tout premier Concours international de piano de Leeds, Marion Harewood, cofondatrice du concours avec Dame Fanny Waterman, a demandé à Britten d’écrire une pièce supplémentaire pour le concours de 1966. Il commença un ensemble de variations à l’automne 1965, mais le manuscrit s’interrompt juste avant la fin du sixième de ce qui semble avoir été destiné à être au moins dix variations. Ici, dans Variations (1965) pour piano, Colin Matthews conclut la sixième variation et vous pouvez acheter la partition pour piano, qui inclut une reproduction fac-similée de la première page du manuscrit original de Britten.
