Les sonates ne sont pas regroupées selon leur degré de difficulté, elles sont données dans l’ordre correspondant à la numérotation de Kirkpatrick. Cela correspond approximativement à l’ordre dans lequel ils ont été composés. Ainsi, il est devenu possible que les paires de sonates incluses dans la sélection soient placées près l’une de l’autre. À part quelques modifications mineures inévitables, cette édition suit exactement le texte original et ses marquages. Cela ne s’applique pas à la digitation, qui est entièrement un ajout éditorial. (Dans l’original, il n’y a pas de doigté.) Le nombre de sonates de Scarlatti entendues sur la scène de concert et apprises par les élèves de piano est relativement faible. Nous pouvons comprendre cela si l’on considère que les publications, y compris une plus grande quantité de contenu, n’ont pas été accessibles au public. Pour cette raison, la tâche principale de cette sélection est d’élargir le cercle de ces rares œuvres et, à juste titre, populaires. Parallèlement, il vise à offrir une vue d’ensemble des sonates de Scarlatti, suivant le développement du compositeur depuis les Essercizi de 1738 jusqu’aux œuvres écrites vers la fin de sa vie.
